It can also happen on the BACK of the plate when higher energy rounds hit or a second round hits in the same spot, sending metal spall from the plate out into your body. Ricochet is when pieces, or even the whole bullet deflect off a steel plate when hitting at a sharper angle. These 10x12" soft inserts are designed to go in your plate pockets IN FRONT of YOUR steel SAPI plates to mostly eliminate spall and reduce ricochets, and an additional pair can go behind your plates IF you aren't using soft IIIa armor behind them (these are not covers). They stop the bullet fragments exploding off after hitting the steel to keep them from hitting you or your nearby buddy. They do not provide any protection used alone. Spall Blockers work for many shots, but then you can replace with new ones to continue using your steel. These are also needed behind CERAMIC plates is you are not using them over soft armor. The ceramic fractures when shot and can cause injury without other protection. These are very thin and add only 5 ounces for the pair. Made of the same Kevlar as in the level IIIa inserts (10 times stronger than steel) and ballistic nylon. Testing shows 1 layer stops most spall,…
