Gold filled jewelry is different from gold plated jewelry. Gold filled jewelry is made by heat and pressure bonding a layer (at least 25 micron thickness) of gold to some base metal core. It has all the great characteristics of solid gold jewelry. It does not flake off, tarnish or discolor. Gold filled jewelry is an economical alternative to solid gold. Gold plated is a method of covering another type of metal with a very thin, almost microscopic (usually 0.5-micron thick), film of pure gold by electroplating it. Gold-filled jewelry is much more valuable than gold-plated. As an additional note, 18K yellow/rose is more yellow than 14K (or 10K) yellow/rose gold, as 18K contains 75% pure gold, while 14K contains 58.5% gold and 10K contains 41.7% gold. 18K white gold appears similar to 14K/10K white gold.
