An unusually detailed 1954 Fred Harvey bird’s-eye view map of the Grand Canyon, printed on an exceptionally thin, almost tissue-like paper stock and designed to fold into a compact tourist format. The fragile, lightweight construction is an interesting feature of the piece in its own right and helps explain the pronounced original folds and translucency visible from the reverse.
The striking tinted panorama combines roads, trails, hotels, archaeological sites, viewpoints, geological formations and a dense network of historic place names. Among the many identified features are Brahma Temple, Zoroaster Temple, Buddha Temple, Confucius Temple, Cheops Pyramid, Point Sublime, Phantom Ranch, Tonto Plateau, Kaibab Trail, Bright Angel Trail, Desert View and the Watchtower, the Painted Desert, Navajo Bridge, Marble Canyon and Kaibab National Forest.
The map also documents terminology that has since changed, including West Rim Drive, now Hermit Road; Yavapai Observation Station, now Yavapai Geology Museum; and the Wayside Museum of Archeology, subsequently known as Tusayan Museum. Together these details make the sheet an exceptional visual record of how the Grand Canyon was mapped and presented to visitors in the mid-1950s.

The map itself prominently notes:
“ALL UNDER FRED HARVEY MANAGEMENT—ALL OPEN THE YEAR ROUND.”
The accompanying text also identifies regional Indigenous peoples and advertises afternoon “Indian Dances” at Hopi House, reflecting the way Indigenous culture was incorporated into Fred Harvey’s mid-century presentation of the Southwest and the continuing architectural legacy of Mary Colter’s Hopi…
