Antique Japanese Imari Arita Porcelain Fish-Shaped or Sea Bream Platter, late Meiji Period, ca. 1890-1912
This beautiful Japanese porcelain fish-shaped or sea bream platter has extremely elegant and fine hand-painted decoration featuring the Imari palette with underglaze blue and overglaze red, green, and gold enamels. The porcelain body has spines molded in relief on the fins and tail. In underglaze blue on the reverse, there are four hand-painted wave motifs, a simple key-fret pattern around the unglazed foot, and the commemorative mark of Ming Dynasty Emperor Wan-Li (1573-1619), all in underglaze blue. The Ming Dynasty mark is how the Japanese potters honored the inventive and extraordinary Ming-period porcelains. The piece appears to be in mint condition.
Dimensions: 9-7/8" long, 6¾" max. wide, 1-3/16" tall/ deep
Condition: Mint condition. No cracks, chips or repairs. Shows no appreciable wear except to the bottom of the foot.
