History and Creation
- The Counterfeiting Problem: The Confederate government faced massive issues with fake money during the Civil War. To fight this, Treasury Secretary Christopher Memminger hired the London engraving firm S. Straker & Sons to make secure, highly detailed printing plates for the backs of the planned 1864 currency series.
- The Electrotyping Process: Straker used an advanced electrochemical method called electrotyping—coined as a "chemicograph"—to create deeply intricate, fine-lined metal plates that were very hard to copy.
Denominations and Later Reproductions
- The Set: A complete design suite included back plates intended for six denominations: $5, $10, $20, $50, $100, and $500.
- Rediscovery: Decades later, some of the original captured plates surfaced and were acquired by numismatist Philip H. Chase, who struck a limited run of trial prints in the 1950s before donating the historical metal plates to the Smithsonian Institution.
- Collector Status: Modern collectors prize these 1950s restrike prints—often graded by services like PMG or PCGS—as well as the rare original plates when they occasionally appear at auction.
