About this product
I have quite a history with the UMI Conn/King/Benge/CKB 7 British-style cornet mouthpiece. It was the first short-shank, deep-cup design I had ever played, and it solved problems incurred with the Vincent Bach 5A, 5V, and Bach-esque Conn 3. Those had normal-length designs with deep cups [tending to play flat]; the 5A and 3 were not radically darker-sounding than other pieces, and the 5V was somewhat uncomfortable despite having a mellower sound.
Back then, the brand Denis Wick was unknown to us; this 7 is rather like a Wick 5, but with a flatter rim and more open backbore than the Wick. The 7 is also rather like the Yamaha 9E, and is a bit deeper than comparable Conn Wonder and Lewington-McCann models.
This 7 design has a medium-wide, somewhat flat rim for comfort, with a medium rim bite and slightly smaller diameter to aid endurance. That helps counter the extremely deep, flugelhorn-esque cup [deeper than the UMI/CKB 7-FL!], soft throat shoulder, large throat, and somewhat open backbore. While not easy to play in the upper register, it's not nearly as flat and difficult as other deep-cup, long-shank models.
The sound is very dark & mellow, without the edge of trumpet-style mouthpiece cups. The 7 has less definition/is a bit fuzzier than those, but pairs excellently with mouthpiece-sensitive cornets, such as the Yamaha YCR-731 or Conn 5A & 9A Victor. WIth a Blessing Standard stencil cornet, it had a very warm sound.
Combined with the right bell shape, such as that of the Amati-Kraslice 2551/B-1038 tuning-bell cornet, 200P/B-1041/ACR-241 pocket cornet, or ATR-304/ATR-314 pocket trumpet, it has an even darker sound approaching flugelhorn.
It could even work with flugelhorns or mellophones given the correct shank adapter!
Like so many UMI mouthpieces, this was made by Lausmann in Nauheim, [West] Germany. While primarily appearing under UMI brasswind brands, like MPN 1047BS "Conn 7" here, UMI also marketed an unbranded version with MPN 1187BR. Lausmann also…
