This is a very fine vintage Hopi wedding sash, also known as a wedding belt or rain sash, hand woven by Herbert Talahaftewa with Original Tag attached, Vintage 20th Century

Worked in creamy white cotton, this substantial textile features a pronounced herringbone pattern, with repeating diagonal lines creating a richly textured surface. Elaborate ends combine smaller braided sections, rounded cotton-wrapped ornaments, twisted cords, and long flowing fringe. Its restrained color brings particular attention to the intricacy of the handwork.

The attached printed tag reads “Hopi Arts & Crafts, 2nd Mesa, Arizona,” with “Wedding Belt” handwritten in the object field and “Herbert Talahaftewa” in the craft worker field. The tag remains attached and is included with the sash.

About the Artist: Herbert Talahaftewa the elder was a Hopi textile weaver and silversmith, also remembered as a traditional healer and herbalist. He was married to basket weaver Evangeline Talahaftewa and was the grandfather and namesake of Hopi katsina carver Herb Talahaftewa.

White cotton wedding sashes form part of traditional Hopi bridal clothing and also appear in ceremonial dance attire, where the long fringe is associated with falling rain.
