NWA 16280, L3, 0.93g, Chondrule packed meteorite with a polished face, beautiful

Name: NWA 16280

Classification: L3

Weight: 0.93g

Description: Meteorite with a polished face. Very densly packed chondrules visible on polished face and windworn fragmented side.

Provenance: I am the main mass holder so you have perfect provenance.

Process: Cut and/or polished using distilled water.

Collector's Notes: This find is comprised of many small stones found over a broad area. They are mostly fragmented and wind worn but a few of them have remnant crust. This is a beautiful L3 with vibrant chondrules that are densely packed. I have also found small clasts of a dark material. I have previously asked the scientists about the dark clasts in L3 and LL3 material. They said that since type 3 material is surface material there are often components of previouse impacts intermixed and they are likely a melt or highly altered clast from the same parent body.

Class information: L3 meteorites belong to the L (low-iron) group of ordinary chondrites. They are classified as type 3, meaning they are among the most primitive members of their group showing little thermal alteration. They contain about 20-25% total iron, with relatively little metallic Fe-Ni compared to H chondrites. Their minerals remain chemically unequilibrated, and their chondrules are fresh, sharply defined, and diverse in composition. This makes L3 chondrites important "time capsules," preserving some of the earliest solar nebula materials and offering insights into the primordial processes that shaped the first solid bodies of the Solar System.
