Cabinet Card of Two Men in Drag

Author: Pach Bro’s Photography Studio Title: Cabinet Card of Two Men in Drag

Description: 16.2x10.5cm. Faint rubbing at lower right corner of card with some light soiling to rear, else a fine example. Cabinet card features two men dressed in drag. Although not identified as such, the men were likely members of the Harvard Hasty Pudding Club.

The Harvard Hasty Pudding Club was established in 1795 as a social society, a difficult task to accomplish at Harvard back then. In 1844, a secret cadre of members turned the group’s monthly meeting into a staged production of Bombastes Furioso, a burlesque tragic opera, thus beginning the Hasty Pudding Theatricals. The group performed throughout the region, even making it to New York in 1879. By the 1880s and 1890s, the productions had developed into all-male musical burlesques known for their satire, wit, and cross-dressing performances, a tradition that is described as “proto-feminist.”.
