Vintage Mexican Folk Art Carved Wood Diablo Vampire Mask Hand Painted Guerrero

Striking vintage hand-carved and hand-painted wooden folk art mask, attributed to Mexico. This wonderfully expressive mask depicts a grotesque devil or vampire-like figure with large blue eyes, dramatically arched brows, exaggerated ears, deeply carved facial features, and prominent fang-like teeth. The mask is carved from a substantial piece of wood and hollowed by hand on the reverse. Its wonderfully irregular carving, bold pink, orange, black, blue and red painted decoration, and exaggerated expression give it tremendous folk-art character. The imagery is consistent with the long tradition of Mexican diablo (devil) and fantastic character masks, particularly examples associated with Guerrero and Michoacán. Because the mask is unsigned and its exact place of origin is unknown, it is being offered as attributed to Mexican folk art rather than to a specific region or maker. The mask shows age and use/wear, including paint loss, surface wear, scratches, losses on the nose and eyebrow, irregularities and darkening to the wood. The reverse is very roughly hand carved and has a dark surface. A simple wire hanger has been attached to the back for display. Please examine all photographs carefully as they form an important part of the condition description. A fantastic piece for a collection of Mexican folk art, masks, diablos, Latin American art, outsider/primitive art, or unusual Halloween and gothic décor.
