Antique Chinese filigree Tian-Tsui dragon brooch. The blue Kingfisher feathers are cut by hand and placed, with precision, onto the mount. The placement of each feather isn't random, either. The artisan deliberately oriented the feather material to exploit the direction of the feather barbs and maximize the brilliant blue effect. The elaborate dragon is skillfully created by hand. The metalwork is intricate and includes extensive openwork/filigree-like metalwork, raised scale texture, articulated-looking limbs, curling tendrils, and those extraordinary feather-inlaid sections forming the mane, wings/ornamental appendages and tail. The dragon has 4 toes, which is an important historical detail. In imperial Chinese decorative traditions, the number of dragon claws could signify rank and status. The long, substantial pin, the way the framework is constructed, the hand-worked appearance, and the dimensional dragon all reinforce the impression that this is an older piece.
