Up for sale is a remarkably preserved, highly unique Henry Browne & Son Ltd. "Sestrel" military-pattern hand-bearing compass (Serial No. 19394/8). Manufactured at the Station Works in Barking & London, this battleship-gray service instrument is a stunning piece of maritime history.
MECHANICAL & LIQUID CONDITION (Collector Grade): Unlike 95% of vintage maritime compasses on the market, the fluid chamber on this unit is completely intact with ABSOLUTELY ZERO AIR BUBBLES. The liquid is clear, and the dial floats flawlessly, providing smooth, dampening "Dead Beat" alignment. The base is clearly engraved with the military-spec instruction: "Fill only with water alcohol mixture .930 SP. GR."
UNIQUE CAPTAIN'S PRESENTATION PLAQUES: This piece has incredible history and personality. It features two custom plaques. One identifies the original captain on the handle: "Frank O. Burn." The second features a classic, tongue-in-cheek piece of sailor lore: "This is a swell ship for a skipper, but hell ship for the crew."
COSMETIC CONDITION & PATINA:
- Body: Original gray military paint shows honest, vintage wear and field patina.
- Handle: The original wood handle is in pristine condition.
- Leather: The original leather strap remains exceptionally pliant and flexible. It has been lightly conditioned only on the finished outer grain side to preserve its structural integrity.
Transport Wooden Box: The custom dovetailed wooden transport box shows light storage scratches but is structurally sound.
Includes: Sestrel hand-bearing compass, original wooden handle, original pliant leather.
The story that follows this piece: The name on this piece Frank O. Burn likely refers to a real-life British mariner named Frank Burn (born 1876 in Yorkshire), whose family has deep, documented ties to the Hull and Wakefield shipping docks. Records show his family lived directly on dockside vessels (like a ship named The Vine), and he grew up to spend his life working the rivers and coastal trade…
